The most beloved tale associated with this festival is the story of Hou Yi and Chang'e. Long ago, ten suns scorched the earth, and the heroic archer Hou Yi shot down nine of them to save humanity. As a reward, he was given the Elixir of Immortality. However, a treacherous follower tried to steal it. To protect it, Hou Yi's wife, Chang'e, drank the elixir herself and flew to the moon, where she became the Moon Goddess, forever separated from her love.

It is said that on this night, the moon is at its most beautiful, as Hou Yi would lay out Chang'e's favorite fruits and cakes to remember her. This act of remembrance evolved into the tradition of families gathering under the moonlight, appreciating its beauty, and praying for family safety and good fortune.
